The Hearology Junior Microsuction Procedure
Simple And Safe Paediatric Aural Microsuction Procedure Performed By Expert Clinicians
Hearology has a team of ENT Nurses and Clinical Audiologists with extensive paediatric ear care experience.
The appointment time is 30 minutes for children, as opposed to 15 minutes for adults. This is to ensure that your child is relaxed and fully at ease at all times.
The aural microsuction technique itself uses gentle suction to clean your child’s ears and is much safer and more comfortable than all other forms of ear cleaning, including syringing and irrigation. A small, thin probe is directed at the ear wax in your child’s ear canal and gentle suction is applied to remove the wax in a controlled fashion, piece by individual piece.
With microsuction there is no need for pre-treatment, e.g. olive oil or ear drops – which is also helpful where young children are concerned.

State-of-the-art Equipment
To increase the safety and comfort of your child’s experience, Hearology only uses surgical binocular microscopes. Microscopes of this specification provide the full, depth-of-field visual awareness our specialists need to work safely within the tiny space of the ear canal. Most other microsuction ear cleaning providers use cheaper alternatives, however it’s impossible to gauge the precise location of the eardrum without a microscope.
We are also one of the few microsuction ear cleaning providers to use ENT-grade suction units, which provide quiet, safe, controlled suction superior to the cheaper, portable units typically used. We also only use sterile, single-use tubes, suction tips and instruments.
With Hearology, you get a completely safe experience for your child, during which any stress they experience is reduced to a minimum.

Free Follow-up Appointments
If it is not possible to clean your child’s ears fully at the first sitting, e.g. if there is stubborn wax, or if the ear canal is sensitive, then you can return for free follow-up appointments until the clearance has been completed successfully – as long as these follow-up appointments take place within two weeks of the original appointment.

Please note that if there is no blockage to clear, or if your child is unable to keep still enough for us to carry out the procedure safely, we will only charge for the consultation. We will also refer you on to a service provider that carries out the ear cleaning procedure under anaesthetic.
Please bring with you any appointment notes, letters or test results relating to your child’s ear health that you have obtained from other health professionals. This information is important as it enables us to build an accurate picture of your child’s ear health history. There is time to discuss this history properly during the 30-minute appointment.
All our prices are the same if one or both ears are cleaned. We do not offer a ‘single ear only’ price because we set up our ear cleaning appointments (including clinic time) based on the high likelihood that both ears will need cleaning – even if only one feels blocked. Sometimes it really is only one ear that needs cleaning, however, at Hearology, this will not result in a reduced price being charged.

No Microscope? Then It’s Not ‘Microsuction’!
The microsuction technique derives its name from the use of a microscope to carry out the procedure. The use of a microscope is important not just because of the magnification but also because of the depth-of-field awareness it provides. Without this depth-of-field awareness, it is very difficult for the clinician to judge the precise location of the eardrum. Only by using a surgical-grade microscope is it possible to carry out the aural microscution procedure safely.

Terms and Conditions
Our procedures all require written consent. We have a zero-tolerance lateness policy. To prevent automatic cancellation, a paediatric ear cleaning service requires pre-payment that must be received at least 24 hours before the appointment start time. Cancellation or postponement without penalty is possible up to 24 hours before the appointment start time – and, if the cancellation occurs in line with this timeframe, a full refund will be given. However, regardless of the reason, there will be no refund whatsoever for a no show, cancellation or re-scheduling that occurs within the 24-hour period before the specified appointment start time and, in all these scenarios, another full pre-payment will be required for a specific, non-refundable, non-exchangeable appointment next time. If the appointment that’s postponed, missed or cancelled late was for a free service, it will become chargeable at a rate specified by Hearology prior to re-booking – that you will have the choice to accept or refuse. If there is no wax to clear, or if we have to abort the procedure for safety reasons – e.g. if your child is unable to keep their head still – then we will refund the difference between the pre-payment amount and the £99 consultation-only charge. The price of your Hearology appointment does not vary based on the actual duration of the appointment. We accept cash and card payment, including AmEx. We prefer to email receipts, but can print them upon request. We will not tolerate any form of abuse of our staff, we will be the judge of what constitutes abuse and we reserve the right to cancel your appointment without any refund whatsoever in this situation.
